Job Description

The Treasury and Income Tax Office is seeking a skilled Treasury Investigator that has the ability to monitor and accurately investigate various income tax issues. In this exciting role you will have the chance to develop your existing skills and gain even more knowledge that can contribute to the overall success of the Treasury and Income Tax Office. 

 Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Contacts delinquent businesses or individuals by personal visits, phone, or written communications to inform them of their delinquency and to obtain payment of personal property taxes or City income taxes. Also responds to questions about tax liability, penalties and consequences of non-payment. Communication may also include attorneys, accountants or other representatives of the taxpayer. 
  • Monitors and investigates the movement of taxable personal property into, out of, or within the City in order to take appropriate action as required by law, through physical presence, written communication and by verbal communication. 
  • Investigates businesses or individual failure to file necessary income tax returns and withholding tax reports in cooperation with the Income Tax Office. 
  • Prepares Jeopardy Tax Assessment, levy notices, payment demand notices and other miscellaneous collection enforcement pre-requisites.
  • Maintains records of collection and investigation activity.
  • Maintains an exchange of information with the various governmental agencies in an effort to coordinate enforcement activity.
  • Uses various resources to locate delinquent taxpayers.
  • Notifies City Attorney when summons or warrants must be issued.
  • Delivers personal tax statements to businesses presenting a collection or location problem which requires written and verbal communication. 
  • Provides court testimony regarding tax matters and individuals cited to court for non-payment or non-filing.

Ideal candidates will possess the following:

  • Associate’s in Business, Accounting, Economics, Criminal Justice or a related area 
  • And three (3) years of employment experience conducting investigations or three (3) years of employment experience in a financial agency with responsibility for collections; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
